Reports: North Korea test fires short-range missiles

SEOUL, South Korea - North Korea fired two short-range missiles off its west coast on Thursday believed to be part of a test to upgrade capabilities, said news reports published on Friday, quoting South Korean military officials.

North Korea has raised tensions in recent weeks by announcing it would launch a rocket to put a satellite into orbit, but regional powers are urging Pyongyang to drop the plan, saying it would violate U.N. Security Council resolutions.

North Korea launched two short-range missiles believed to be surface-to-ship missiles from its west coast Thursday morning, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper quoted government officials as saying.

"The launch is believed to be to upgrade missile capabilities and not related directly to the North's long-range missile launch," the newspaper quoted a military official as saying.

Another mainstream newspaper JoongAng Ilbo published a similar report.

South Korea's office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff declined to confirm the reports, citing its policy of not speaking publicly on matters involving intelligence activities.

Reclusive North Korea has said it is merely sending a weather satellite into space, but South Korea and the United States say it is a disguised ballistic missile test.

The secretive North has twice tested a nuclear device, but experts doubt whether it yet has the ability to miniaturize an atomic bomb to fit inside a warhead.

The North has said the launch would take place between April 12 and 16. The planned launch, which has even drawn criticism from ally China, will mark the 100th birth anniversary of state founder Kim Il-sung.

SALEM, Ohio (AP) ? Friends and relatives of the co-pilot of JetBlue Airways Flight 191 say he doesn't want to be considered a hero ? but that's exactly what many are calling him.

Pilots train for a whole range of in-flight mishaps including sick passengers, emergency landings and terrorist attacks. But Jason Dowd faced the rarest of scenarios: deciding whether to lock his incapacitated captain out of the cockpit and call for an emergency landing after Clayton Osbon became unruly and had to be subdued by passengers.

Dowd is staying out of the public eye for now, but a wave of overnight fame ? much like 'Miracle on the Hudson' Capt. Chesley Sullenberger ? likely awaits. JetBlue says the decision on whether to go public is up to him, but the airline is not commenting more out of respect for his privacy. Public relations experts say there are big pros and cons to going public, like what "Sully" and his co-captain Jeff Skiles experienced in the aftermath of their emergency landing in the Hudson River.

"For some folks it's a lot to deal with ? especially all at once," said Dr. Ron Bishop, a professor of culture and communication at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "It seems given all the outlets and different means in which we communicate, the attention paid to a person in that situation is ramped up considerably."

According to court documents, Osbon became increasingly incoherent on board the Las Vegas-bound flight Tuesday, and Dowd was "really worried" when Osbon told him "we need to take a leap of faith." Concerned about Osbon's behavior, Dowd suggested they invite an off-duty JetBlue captain who was flying as a passenger to come into the cockpit, but instead, Osbon left the cockpit and later sprinted down the cabin yelling jumbled remarks about Sept. 11 and Iran, documents and witnesses say.

The off-duty captain then joined Dowd, and from inside the locked cockpit, which Osbon tried to re-enter by banging on the door, the co-pilot gave an order through the intercom to restrain Osbon, according to the documents, which don't mention Dowd by name. Passengers wrestled Osbon to the ground, and Dowd diverted the flight from New York to Amarillo, Texas. No one onboard was seriously injured.

Federal prosecutors have charged Osbon, 49, with interfering with a flight crew and he is under medical evaluation at an Amarillo hospital.

Dowd doesn't consider himself a hero, relatives said Thursday. But his actions on board Tuesday's flight were not a surprise to friends and family.

"I'm glad for those people he was the co-pilot that day," said Dowd's mother-in-law, Ruth Ann Kostal. Dowd, who lives in his hometown of Salem, Ohio, with his wife and their two young children, hasn't been able to come home yet because he's still being interviewed by federal authorities in New York, Kostal said. He has made no public comments about Tuesday's flight.

"I can see him being a hero. It does not surprise me one bit that he acted so professionally," said Patty Eaton, a secretary at the church Dowd's family attends.

Passengers, including those who helped restrain Osbon, also credit Dowd for landing their plane safely. David Gonzalez, a 50-year-old former New York corrections office from Tannersville, Pa., who helped tackle Osbon, said the co-pilot is the "real hero" for getting the captain out of the cockpit and locking the door so he couldn't get back in.

"It's because of his actions that we're here," Gonzalez said of Dowd.

David E. Johnson, CEO of Strategic Vision, LLC, a leading public relations agency, said if Dowd comes forward, it would likely give JetBlue a needed public relations boost.

"JetBlue needs someone to really step to the forefront. It's the second person there that's gone berserk they need to show that they've got good and heroic employees," he said.

In 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater pulled the emergency chute on a flight after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He went on the public-address system, swore at a passenger, grabbed a beer and slid down onto the tarmac. He was sentenced to probation, counseling and substance abuse treatment for attempted criminal mischief.

As much as JetBlue likely wants to put Slater's and Osbon's outbursts behind them, Johnson said there's another reason why Dowd may not want to go public.

"He's probably just very low key and just thinks he did what he was supposed to do," Johnson said.

Sullenberger talked extensively about his unlikely celebrity status after crash landing in the Hudson in 2009. He later wrote a book, took part in the making of a documentary and spoke out on issues affecting pilots, including pensions and flight hour regulations. But the shine of the public eye was overwhelming at times, and he equated it to having a fire hose pointed at him.

A spokeswoman for Sullenberger said he declined to comment on this story. His co-pilot Jeff Giles couldn't be reached for comment. Both gave up their flying careers after the accident.

For Dowd, fame could bring opportunities, but Johnson said the pros have to be weighed with the burden of constant attention.

"It will bring some attention to him when he'd rather have it just fade away," Johnson said. "But Sully was your American hero. Sully was apple pie. And this guy might be as well."

Samsung ships five million Galaxy Notes in just five months

Five is an important number for Samsung's Galaxy Note. It has a 5.3-inch screen and now, just five months since it debuted Samsung has announced it's shipped five million units (the one million mark was crossed right around the end of December). That's certainly long enough for you to decide if you're in love with its super-sized frame or the accompanying S-Pen stylus, but unfortunately it has not been quite enough time for the highly-anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich software update to be released. While the world waits for the Premium Suite of apps and Android 4.0, let's think back to all the good times we had, including its initial unveiling, our original review and finally its arrival in the US on AT&T. Walk to highlight disorder

The Oklahoma City version of a national fundraiser, Promise Walk for Pre-eclampsia, is set for 10:30 a.m. May 12.

The event supports the Pre-eclampsia Foundation?s goals of providing patient support and education, raising public awareness and improving health care practices, according to a news release.

Pre-eclampsia is a potentially fatal disorder that occurs during pregnancy and immediately after giving birth.

It affects the mother and child. Patients face elevated blood pressure and can experience organ failure, seizures and cerebral hemorrhages.

About 300,000 patients are treated in the U.S. each year for some form of the disorder.

Participants may register at www.promisewalk.org/oklahomacity.

The cost is $20 for walkers 13 and older and $10 for children 12 and under.

Those who register online will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a goodie bag.

Strollers and pets on leashes are welcome.

Walk-day registration begins at 9:30 a.m. May 12 at the Bob Hope Pavilion at Stars and Stripes Park, 3701 S Lake Hefner Drive.

Events include a raffle and silent auction, snacks and lunch for walkers, face-painting, a QA session with health experts and an end-of-the-day balloon release.

Students seek to stop hunger

Metro Technology Centers' Biomedical Science Academy students are hosting the Walk for Hunger on Saturday.

The Freedom to Feel Our Emotions | Health and Fitness

Emotional Freedom Techniques helps us process and feel uncomfortable emotions. As we learn to be comfortable with feeling our emotions, our capacity to allow any emotion, and its sensations, move through our energy system grows. What this means in a practical way is we can process an emotion, no matter what it is, without having to dissociate from it or distract our self from feeling it. Feeling helps the emotion or energy move freely through our system so it doesn?t short circuit. Emotional freedom is the freedom to feel any feeling, it doesn?t mean freedom from feeling.

What causes a short circuit in our energy system? It seems that anything other than experiencing love and acceptance carries with it the potential for short circuiting our energy system. Love and acceptance feel good and flow through our system uninterrupted. Unless of course we are shut down to love because of being hurt or if we have not experienced love right from the beginning of life. Because if we can?t allow our self to feel love, the experience of love can short circuit in our energy system. We can construct walls for protection, but the walls we build cut off this vital nourishment and our system atrophies. Love nourishes us in every way that we can be nourished.

Hurt, guilt, shame, anger, fear carry huge potential for short circuiting our systems, that is, until we learn how to feel or process these emotions. It?s the reason why these emotions are often referred to as ?negative? and why they can instill so much fear. This fear propels us with an urgency to tap the emotion away, get rid of it and avoid it so we don?t have to feel it. When we can fully feel uncomfortable emotions, our resilience grows, we become stronger and our energy system evolves. All emotions are ultimately good for us when they are felt.

What helps us feel uncomfortable emotions? It appears that feeling loved right from the start of life gives us a head start in handling emotions. Feeling loved gives us resiliency, security and a strong foundation from which we can bend when the wind blows and not snap and break into pieces. When the having and the expression of different emotions are accepted and even encouraged, a sense of esteem and self worth blossoms. Feelings and the person who is having them, are taken seriously and respected which leads to self trust.

Learning how to feel our emotions as early as possible can save us from a lot of heartache later in life, but we can always choose to feel at any stage of our life. It takes courage to feel and EFT can help us accept, sit with and feel our emotions.

Chris Claremont reflects on his dream 'X-Men' movie

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - A decade before Bryan Singer brought the X-Men to the screen, the author of the mutant team's greatest stories imagined an X-movie produced by James Cameron, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, and starring Bob Hoskins as Wolverine and Angela Bassett as Storm.

Chris Claremont spoke Saturday about how he first imagined the movie -- and his acclaimed 17-year run as the writer of Marvel comics' "Uncanny X-Men" -- at a Columbia University panel commemorating his decision to dedicate his archives to the school.

"James Cameron, Bob Hoskins, Angela Bassett -- ahhh. Fanboy heaven. I would have been happy as a clam," Claremont said in a Q&A with Louise Simonson, his longtime "X-Men" editor.

Claremont also talked about how he tried to dissuade former Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter from reviving the character Jean Grey after Claremont killed her off in the Dark Phoenix saga, one of his most famous X-Men stories. (It was partially adapted, along with Claremont's X-Men graphic novel, "God Loves, Man Kills," for the second X-Men film.)

He was wistful about the X-movie that might have been -- but still irritated at the retcon that brought Grey back to life for the comics series "X Factor."

Claremont has said before that he wanted Hoskins as Wolverine and Bassett as Storm, but went into detail Saturday about why a proposed adaptation from the then-married Cameron and Bigelow never came to pass. (Cameron went on to win best picture and director Oscars for "Titanic" and Bigelow to beat Cameron's "Avatar" to win best picture and directing Oscars for "The Hurt Locker.")

In the comics, Claremont noted, Wolverine is diminutive but feral, like a real wolverine. He recalled a scene in the 1984 film "Lassiter" in which Hoskins pushes open a door and shoves the much taller Tom Selleck while berating him. That moment, to Claremont, captured the essence of Wolverine.

He said that as Cameron launched his own studio, Lightstorm Entertainment, in 1990, he and Marvel Comics mastermind Stan Lee went to his office to pitch him an X-Men movie.

"Just think about this for a minute: James Cameron's X-Men. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow. That's what we were playing," Claremont said. "So we're chatting. And at one point Stan looks at Cameron and says, 'I hear you like Spider-Man.' Cameron's eyes lit up.

"And they start talking. And talking. And talking. About 20 minutes later all the Lightstorm guys and I are looking at each other, and we all know the X-Men deal has just evaporated. Kathryn goes off and writes a screen treatment for X-Men that was eaten alive by all the idiots who have a piece of Spider-Man because Marvel during its evolution has sold off the rights time and time and time again.

"To Carolco. To Universal. To this to that. To Fox. It was just a nightmare."

20th Century Fox finally released Singer's "X-Men" in 2000. Sony ultimately released Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" in 2002, with a script by David Koepp.

Claremont had no complaints about Singer's "X-Men" films -- or the casting of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Halle Berry as Storm. They launched a franchise and helped open the door to a decade of comic book blockbusters. But Claremont wondered what might have been if Cameron's film had been made a decade before Singer's.

He was less charitable about the return of Jean Grey, a decision that still annoys him.

Claremont's Dark Phoenix storyline, which culminated in Grey's death in "Uncanny X-Men" number 137 in 1980, was one of the most dramatic in comic book history because it killed off one of the most beloved heroes of comics' Silver Age. Claremont was stunned to learn five years later that Marvel planned to bring the character back to life -- or rather, reveal that Grey hadn't really died -- for the new comic "X Factor," which reunited the original X-Men.

Instead of bringing back Jean Grey, he suggested adding her sister, Sara Grey, to the team. He suggested that Sara Grey could have the mutant power to detect other mutants. While Jean Grey had long been involved with the character Cyclops, Sara could have potential partnerships with all the members of the team, which also included Iceman, Angel, and the Beast.

Shooter liked the idea of bringing Sara Grey into the fray, Claremont said -- but decided to go with the original plan for X-Factor. Within months, the title's original creative team departed, handing the writing duties over to Simonson.
