Gambling in Casinos is Legal so Why is it Illegal on the ... - Cyber Law

Recently the United States government has passed a law creating it illegal for credit card organizations or other such institutions in the United States to make payments over the web to companies that are involved in on the web gambling. I for my component would like to say that I am not a gambler of any kind as the times that I have been to a casino or gambled at 1 are so couple of as to be counted on one hand so it is not with a personal interest that I am against such a law nor is it that I profit in any way, shape or form from on the internet gambling or any other kind. I merely speak out against a law that I think about to be unfair, illogical and hypocritical as it permits the identical activity when practiced in Casinos in cities like Las Vegas or Atlantic City but not on the internet. To my way of thinking this is the equivalent of passing a law that makes it illegal to consume liquor in bars but not in restaurants where the activity is left unaltered but for some reason the law strikes out against.

?

The problem to those who produced the law regarding on-line gambling in the United States was so referred to as ?morality? which of course is arbitrary and if one looks at issues from a purely logical point of view need to in no way be utilised as a basis for law. It becoming this sort of thinking which in the US lead to the failed Volstead Act. This act being the one that brought about prohibition in the United States throughout the 20s which contrary to popular misconception made it unlawful not to produce or consume alcohol but to sell or acquire it. Meaning one could not profit from it which of course some did and in a enormous way.

?

Morality regardless of what ever we could be told is a point of view which has always been as what is regarded as to be moral by one individual or society will not necessarily be regarded as as such by an additional individual or society. For instance some may possibly contemplate adultery as immoral although the law in most countries does not regard it as illegal or at least not anymore. As yet another example I can state how in some countries alcohol consumption is regarded as illegal on religious and moral grounds although in other people it is not. Nonetheless morality should be distinguished between right and wrong. Of course in no way loosing sight of how even these two to a large extent are also subjective to interpretation although for the most component it is accepted by most of society that murder and theft are wrong.

?

With regards to the morality of gambling we like several other issues such as prostitution, drinking, very same sex marriages, smoking, and drug taking can constantly argue about their moral aspects and their effect on society as a whole but can it be regarded as wrong for people who are past a specific age (18 in most countries) to willingly risk loosing their money in an attempt to win a lot more of it even if this be on the web? These folks soon after all are conscious that there is a opportunity that their money will be lost, at least to them. This is a question I would reply in the negative giving the following reason. Why need to it be much less moral for a person to win or loose money in gambling on the internet then it is on ?Wall Street?? This becoming a place were even bigger sums of cash are won and lost. If we lend some thought to the matter is ?investing? money on the stock marketplace not a form of gambling as one is never certain one will profit or not unless 1 has inside info which is even illegal. Naturally I am aware that there are those who will say that on the stock marketplace funds is neither won nor loss but simply changes hands well is it not the same case with on-line gambling and in this argument, let it not slip our minds that investing (or gambling) on the stock market could also be done on the web.

?

If we look at the issue from an even broader perceptive is not gambling on the web much less harmful on the entire then investing or gambling on the stock marketplace? Depending on how 1 wishes to label it, usually bearing in mind that gambling is an activity in which cash modifications hands a lot more by opportunity then by skill or understanding. The stock market naturally becoming a lot more harmful by virtue of becoming able to cause devastating effects on the economy of the entire world whereas net gambling may possibly realistically involve only those who directly partake in it. Furthermore losses from net gambling could in no way even approach those that were caused by the ?sub prime market? which has set the world in to recession though couple of are willing to use the term, at least for now.

?

The reason the United States congress has observed fit to declare gambling on the net as illegal is based upon ?morality?. I personally do not see how this be ?immoral? if such a word could be applied to individuals who by there own no cost will are risking their own assets as opposed to those who do likewise on the stock market. The stock marketplace being a place where on numerous occasions those who invest do not even do so with their own savings but those of others who are not necessarily amongst society?s most affluent or sometimes not even informed as to what is being done with their money. Is it not or need to it not be up to each individual to decide in what form he or she wishes to spend or risk loosing his or her financial resources or in this case not even on what but where??

?

Nonetheless I in what be this whole affair see something else that possibly some do not and that is if individuals are not allowed to gamble on the world wide web or at least those in the US then would they not be forced to do so exclusively in American casinos as they would be left with no other legal selection. This generating it abundantly clear that with a law forbidding gambling on the web on supposedly moral grounds then American casinos would no longer be loosing out to world wide web competition. This leaving the road clear for American gambling loses to stay in America as opposed to leaving the country. This in my opinion is the real issue that is becoming disguised as morality.

?

Naturally given that casinos would be creating more cash due to the fact of this law so would the United States government given that casinos would have greater revenues to be taxed which in a time of crisis would not come as unwanted income. This even goes further as when Americans gamble much less in casinos and more on the world wide web they also invest less income on traveling to those casinos, or staying in the hotels which own the casinos. This making a situation that world wide web gambling has not only taken profits from American casinos but all those businesses connected to them. So taking these factors in to consideration, I in my think (if no one else?s) claim this law was passed to assist casinos in America and their connected businesses in making higher profits although hiding behind the smoke screen that is morality. Moral grounds being that people loose their income and communities suffers as if the very same factor did not occur when the identical activity is carried out in the casinos of Los Vegas or Atlantic City.

?

Of course like with prohibition which did not stop drinking but rather increased it this law based on hypocrisy will also not stop on the internet gambling either even for Americans (let alone folks from other countries) as all they will need do is travel outside the US or just locate a foreign bank to problem them a credit card that is not bound to uphold laws that just do not make sense and serve no purpose other then the interest of a select few. ?

Important Insights On The Physician Assistant Scholarship

You will find that most people looking to become physician assistants are going to take the time to research the choices out there for a scholarship. What students are going to find is that this will be a great way for them to get into this exciting industry. There is a good amount of attraction for young students to pursue a career in this field. The attraction for young students to pursue a career as a physician assistant has a lot to do with the fact that the rate of growth in this field is quite aggressive. Along with this, the professional will find that there do have a considerable number of opportunities to choose from.

Besides the basic attraction of working in this field, a career as a physician assistant also provides students with the opportunity to be part of something meaningful and to do something meaningful with their lives. For example, a career as a physician assistant allows professionals to both work in and serve their community. Another benefit is the fact that there are practical benefits to this career. For instance, the time it takes students to study to become a physician assistant takes a lot less time than it would take for them to study to become a full-fledged physician. Another thing to consider is that even though they aren?t actually doctors, they still can earn quite a bit.

What students who are getting ready to enter into the medical industry will find out is that there is assistance that they can take advantage of. One career this applies to is the physician assistant and students who might be short on the funds to make their dreams come true.

Reason for Scholarships

Students will find that there is one major reason out there for a physician assistant scholarship. Simply stated, there is a furious demand for qualified and highly trained personnel in the medical field. Perhaps one of the reasons for the demand for physician assistants is the fact that there are new requirements to reevaluate how medicine is being practice. This is how medicine should now be practiced in the US. Linked to this is the fact that news stories are reporting on how the medical system is currently broken. Because of this, we find that because the U.S. is showing a need for qualified professionals, the federal government now offers assistance for those students that may qualify for them.

1. A Look at Federal Progams

If you look at the federal programs out there, you will find that they offer quite a few for physician assistance scholarships and there are possibilities for students. For example, there is the Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students. This is a scholarship in place to help students in the medical field get the financial help that they need. If you need another avenue to go, you should check out Health Resources and Services Administration National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program. This scholarship is defined by its offering of funds for education in return for some dedication on the student?s part to provide service in a field that has traditionally had a hard time in retaining medical professionals.

Another path to getting a physician assistant scholarship is through the U.S. military. Many students tend to overlook this option. Perhaps some think that military service is too hard, or others simply have an ideological objection to what the U.S. military does. However, students who really want a career as a physician assistant should really think hard about joining the military. consider the fact that the military is in desperate need of medical professionals. A lot of people continue to fail to realize that the military does more than just defend the country and go to war! Students can get into the military and have their medical education paid for with a preset enlistment period. In fact; many states have a similar feature to help ensure there are qualified professionals in their communities.

2. Take into Consideration Private Programs

A student looking to become a physician assistant should also look at some private programs that offer a physician assistant scholarship. A good place to start with regard to this kind of scholarship is any organization that represents the physician assistant field. Typically these organizations will have scholarships available for physician assistant students. However, they always possess a great comprehension of both the educational and the professional criteria of the physician assistant. Depending on the school you attend, you will find there are plenty of programs out there that can help you. As a matter of fact, certain physician assistant schools might even feature their very own foundation-sponsored scholarship to aid you in defraying the financial burden of this kind of education! Ethnic organizations are another good choice for a physician assistance scholarship. If students fit the specific ethnicity of said ethnic organization, they can capitalize on the monies of these programs so that they can receive the required help as they strive toward their career goals.

3. Non-traditional Programs

Because there are many possibilities out there, students should also consider non-traditional scholarships. A program that some students may want to consider will have them acting as an intern in the field. You will find that hospitals, HMOs and even healthcare groups can offer education assistance. If an individual is at a lower level in the medical field, they should contact their human resources department to determine if they have an education assist program.

You will find that a physician assistant scholarship can make a considerable difference. It can be the difference between being discouraged or having your career dreams come true. Students are advised not to think that because they have financial problems that they cannot get a great education and career!

IDC: Nokia, Samsung, Apple are the new top 3 handset makers

The latest figures are in from IDC: the top three global smartphone makers are Nokia, Samsung and Apple, in that order. Drilling down into the figures finds some surprises: Cupertino's third-place with only 8.7 percent of the market, while the giants of Korea and Finland are duking it out with 22.8 percent and 26.6 respectively. LG and ZTE are tied for fourth, but that's hardly good news for Goldstar, given that it's lost a staggering 42.2 percent of its market share in the last twelve months (Nokia was the other loser, eating 8.2 percent). The cause for the drop is in part the world's rejection of feature-phones (dropped faster than fashionistas rightly abandoned Ugg Boots and Jeggings) as millions upgraded to smartphones. After the break we've got the tables in full for anyone who wants to have their mind blown at the sheer quantity of handsets shipped in the last year, both financial and calendar.

Homeboy Industries Shares Gang Members' Stories Of Success

Within the country's largest gang intervention program, young men and women learn job skills working side-by-side with their would-be rivals. That's because one of Homeboy Industries' founding principles is that it works with gang members.

Los Angeles-based Homeboy Industries provides academic, career and re-entry services to thousands of current and former gang members every day, founder and director Father Gregory Boyle explained to a group of Huffington Post editors and reporters on Monday.

The organization's opportunities and programs fill in gaps in government services, Boyle said. It has grown to include a charter school as well as social services and job training facilities. The nonprofit also has a bakery, farmers markets and a cafe that all employ gang members.

Boyle, a former Los Angeles pastor, said he had to bury 180 young people lost to violence in the 1980s, which prompted him to create the organization. He explained that the approach to re-entry services must go much deeper than the common perception of what causes gang violence.

"It's not about conflict, or else peacemaking would work," he said. "It's about despair -- not rational grievance. No shooter is hoping to kill; rather they are hoping to die."

Boyle said Homeboy has received recognition for its role in Los Angeles' declining gang-related homicide rate. But perhaps an even greater testament to its effectiveness is Will Lopez, a former gang member who found a new start through Homeboy. He sought out the help of Father Doyle, his neighborhood priest at the time, who assisted him in finding a job and a direction in life.

Lopez told The Huffington Post that he has worked in fields from maintenance to computer technology, but that he has developed a specific interest in speaking out against domestic violence. His father was murdered, and he wanted to make sure he would be involved in his own daughter's life.

"I made a commitment to my daughter that that wouldn't happen," he said.

Like the gang members it helps, Homeboy has had its share of hardships. After the Homeboy Bakery burned down in October 1999, the nonprofit relied on donors. (Disclosure: HuffPost Editor-in-Chief Arianna Huffington helped lead that effort.)

Father Boyle added that the organization ran out of money 18 months ago, due in part to the recession. The company laid off numerous employees and Boyle stopped taking paychecks.

"In the early days, you could always find jobs for the 'homies,'" Boyle said, noting that competition in the job market took a toll on the organization's efforts.

Homeboy has inspired 15 similar initiatives around the country, from San Francisco to Boston. The organization also has a successful food line found in major grocery stores, and it is working to spread the word about how its programs can work in other areas. Boyle sums it by saying the approach comes down to one mantra.

"Let's be smart on crime, rather than soft or hard on crime."

Testosterone makes us less cooperative and more egocentric, study finds

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Testosterone makes us overvalue our own opinions at the expense of cooperation, research from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL (University College London) has found. The findings may have implications for how group decisions are affected by dominant individuals.

Problem solving in groups can provide benefits over individual decisions as we are able to share our information and expertise. However, there is a tension between cooperation and self-oriented behaviour: whilst groups may benefit from a collective intelligence, collaborating too closely can easily lead to an uncritical groupthink ending in decisions that are bad for all..

Attempts to understand the biological mechanisms behind group decision making have tended to focus on the factors that promote cooperation. Research has shown that people given a boost of the hormone oxytocin tend to be cooperative. Now, in a study published today in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers have shown that the hormone testosterone has the opposite effect ? in other words, it makes people act less cooperatively and more egocentrically.

Dr Nick Wright and colleagues at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging at UCL carried out a series of tests using seventeen pairs of female* volunteers who had previously never met. The test took place over two days, spaced a week apart. On one of the days, both volunteers in each pair were given a testosterone supplement; on the other day, they were given a placebo.

During the experiment, both women sat in the same room and viewed their own screen. Both individuals saw exactly the same thing. First, in each trial they were shown two images, one of which contained a high contrast target ? and their job was to decide individually which image contained the target. If their individual choices agreed, they received feedback and moved on to the next trial. However, if they disagreed then they were asked to collaborate and discuss with their partner to reach a joint decision. One of the pair then input this joint decision.

The researchers found that, as expected, cooperation enabled the group to perform much better than the individuals alone when individuals had received only the placebo. But, when given a testosterone supplement, the benefit of cooperation was markedly reduced. In fact, higher levels of testosterone were associated with individuals behaving egocentrically and deciding in favour of their own selection over their partner's.

"When we are making decisions in groups, we tread a fine line between cooperation and self-interest: too much cooperation and we may never get our way, but if we are too self-orientated, we are likely to ignore people who have real insight," explains Dr Wright.

"Our behaviour seems to be moderated by our hormones ? we already know that oxytocin can make us more cooperative, but if this were the only hormone acting on our decision-making in groups, this would make our decisions very skewed. We have shown that in fact testosterone also affects our decisions, by making us more egotistical. Most of the time, this allows us to seek the best solution to a problem, but sometimes, too much testosterone can help blind us to other people's views. This can be very significant when we are talking about a dominant individual trying to assert his or her opinion in, say, a jury."

Testosterone is implicated in a variety of social behaviours. For example, in chimpanzees, levels of testosterone rise ahead of a confrontation or a fight. In female prisoners, studies have found that higher levels of testosterone correlate with increased anti-social behaviour and higher aggression. Researchers believe that such findings reflect a more general role for testosterone in increasing a motivation to dominate others and increase egocentricity.

Understanding the brain is one of the strategic aims of the Wellcome Trust, which funded this study. Commenting on the findings, Dr John Williams, Head of Neuroscience and Mental Health at the Trust, said: "Cooperating with others has obvious advantages for sharing skills and experience, but we know it doesn't always work, particularly if one alpha male or alpha female dominates the decision-making. This result helps us understand at a hormonal level the factors that can disrupt our attempts to work together."
